Photo Notes — Light & Shadow

Tone and contrast shape how a photograph feels before it’s even understood. They decide where the eye lands and how long it stays. High contrast builds tension — light pushing against dark, edges sharpening meaning. Low contrast softens the world, letting forms dissolve into one another. Tone is the atmosphere that carries emotion; it’s how light defines weight, mood, and distance. Even when composition and subject stay the same, a shift in tone can turn certainty into quiet, or quiet into drama. It’s not just how much light there is, but how it’s distributed — the balance between what’s revealed and what’s withheld.
